The 1980s, a time of Yuppies, stock market booms, hedonistic lifestyles, and most important of all, soap operas. These big budget and brash dramas gave us in the UK an insight into lives we could only dream of. The two biggest, Dallas and Dynasty were the big guns and as season followed season the plots and shoulder pads became increasingly outrageous.
Dynasty returns to CBS Drama on the 12th so here’s your guide to some of the colourful characters you’ll be meeting over the next few months.
Played for 9 seasons by the enigmatic John Forsythe, Blake Alexander Carrington was the head of the Carrington family with more than a few bad deals in his past especially when it comes to his first wife, more of her later. Blake knows the oil business inside out and almost single handily brought up his four children, that was until he married a lady named Krystle Jennings…
Softly spoken and always the goody-goody of the series (well most of the time) Linda Evans gave Krystle a truly caring side, she was a woman with high morals and even higher standards. She was a shoulder for the lonely and an ear for the lost and a target for some of Blakes’ first wife’s anger. Krystle saw the good in everyone and loved Blake for who he was not what he had, often to her misfortune.
Alexis Carrington Colby
Blake’s first wife, Alexis is a hard-hearted and tough lady who remained a thorn in his side for the entire run, well, from Season 2 anyway. Played with supreme elegance by Joan Collins, Alexis became the Super-Bitch that all others would be measured by. Collins was perfect for the role and the many fights Alexis had with Krystle have become delicious moments of TV history.
Fallon Carrington Colby
The daughter of Blake and Alexis, Fallon was trouble for both parents. With the sarcasm and edge of her mother but sometimes showing her father’s gentler side she was unpredictable at times and brought most of her problems on herself. Originally played by Pamela Sue Martin, she was enigmatic portraying a woman who’d hit the glass ceiling of business and constantly frustrated by the lack of respect she got from the male dominated business.
The man who could set hearts fluttering from 20 paces, Jeff Colby was as smart as he was handsome. The much put-upon and on-off husband of Fallon, Jeff was a soft-hearted man who often seemed at odds working in the tough oil business. John James gave life to this character with smoldering aplomb, his square chin and high standards often had him as the victim in his traumatic love life with Fallon.
